우에다 쇼지 모래극장

우에다 쇼지(植田正治, 1913–2000)는 일본의 소박한 시골, 돗토리현에서 태어나 평생 고향의 풍광을 배경으로 사진을 촬영한 작가입니다. 전시는 그의 작업 세계를 통해 ‘현실과 환상의 경계’를 시각화하는 방식을 조명합니다. 바닷가와 광활한 모래언덕이라는 지역적 풍경은 우에다가 구축한 연출 사진에서 중요한 무대가 되며, 이를 통해 일상의 장면이 초현실적 이미지로 재구성되는 과정을 경험해 보세요. 대표 연작 〈모래언덕〉, 〈작은 이야기〉, 〈아이들의 사계절〉을 비롯해 후기 컬러 작업 〈하얀 바람〉 시리즈와 70세에 새롭게 도전한 패션 사진까지 폭넓게 구성됩니다. 작품을 통해 우에다는 유행이나 특정 사조에 의존하지 않고 스스로 확립한 사진적 언어를 선보이며, 이미지를 통해 관객에게 시간, 공간, 움직임, 인물의 관계가 만들어내는 시각적 리듬과 긴장을 전달하고자 합니다. 이번 전시를 통해 연출 사진의 거장으로 불리는 우에다 쇼지의 독창적 시각을 마주하며, 사진이라는 매체가 어떻게 현실을 재창조하고 상상과 일상을 연결할 수 있는지를 확인해 보시길 바랍니다.

Shoji Ueda (1913–2000), born in Tottori Prefecture, photographed throughout his life landscapes close to home—coastal horizons and sweeping dunes. The exhibition explores Ueda’s visual language, defined by his poetic negotiation between reality and imagination. The beach and desert-like dunes form theatrical stages where ordinary life is transformed into surreal tableau. The exhibition includes major series such as <Sand Dunes>, <Small Events>, <Children’s Four Seasons>, later color works from <White Wind>, and his late fashion assignments—begun at the age of seventy. Rather than aligning with prevailing trends, Ueda developed a distinct photographic vocabulary, conveying visual tension and rhythm through the relationship among figures, time, and space. The exhibition invites visitors to encounter Ueda’s unique perspective and to reflect on how photography can reshape reality, linking imagination with everyday life.
