힐튼서울 자서전

1983년 서울 남산 아래에 자리한 힐튼서울은 한국 모더니즘 건축의 중요한 이정표이자, 서울을 대표하는 환대의 장소였습니다. 김종성 건축가가 설계한 이 건축물은 남산의 지형을 품는 듯한 외관과 녹색 대리석, 트래버틴, 오크 목재, 브론즈로 완성된 실내 공간, 그리고 18미터 높이의 웅장한 아트리움 등 1983년 개관 이후 40여 년 간 많은 이들에게 다양하게 기억되고 있습니다. 《힐튼서울 자서전》은 지금 철거가 진행 중인 공간을 대신해 시간을 회고하고, 수많은 이야기와 기록을 다시 수면 위로 올리는 전시입니다. 서신, 도면, 사진 기록, 현장에서 수집된 구조재 및 오브제들에 담겨 있는 건축물의 기획, 설계, 시공 단계부터 준공하여 운영, 그리고 철거되기까지 과정을 직접 느껴보세요. 전시에는 작가 임정의, 정지현, 최용준, 노송희, 백윤석, 테크캡슐, 서지우, 그래픽캐뷰러리가 참여해, 각자의 시선으로 해체된 공간의 파편들을 새로운 작품으로 확장합니다. 전시의 마지막에는 많은 이들에게 추억으로 남은 크리스마스 자선열차가 다시 운행하며 이별의 순간을 따뜻하게 장식합니다. 사라져가는 건축과 마주하는 시간 속에서 힐튼서울이 남긴 기억과 여운을 느껴보세요.

Opened in 1983 at the foot of Namsan, Hilton Seoul became both a key milestone in Korean modernist architecture and an enduring symbol of hospitality in Seoul. Designed by architect Kim Jong-sung, the structure featured an exterior harmonizing with the mountain’s slope, green marble and travertine interiors, oak wood, bronze details, and a soaring eighteen-meter atrium—elements remembered differently but vividly by visitors over four decades. As the building now undergoes demolition, Autobiography of Hilton Seoul reflects on its history and re-examines memories embedded in the site. Letters, architectural drawings, archival photographs, and salvaged structural elements reveal the full lifespan of the building—from its conceptualization and construction to its operation and dismantling. Works by Im Jung-ui, Jung Ji-hyun, Choi Yong-joon, Noh Song-hee, Baek Yun-seok, Tech Capsule, Seo Ji-woo, and Graphic Cavalry reinterpret fragments of the building into new artistic forms. The exhibition concludes with the return of the iconic Christmas charity train—reviving a collective memory with warmth and farewell. Through this encounter with an architecture in transition, visitors are invited to reflect on presence, time, and the traces a place leaves behind.
