COMPANY World Affair

헬싱키 기반의 디자인 스튜디오 콤파니(COMPANY)는 지난 20여 년간 전 세계의 고유한 제조 기술과 이를 지켜 온 지역의 장인들을 찾아 여행해 왔습니다. 이들의 탐험은 낯선 땅의 문화와 사람들을 깊이 이해하고, 온 세상과 사랑에 빠지는 과정, 곧 ‘World Affair’ 그 자체입니다.

핀란드의 깊은 숲부터 파키스탄의 활기 넘치는 시장까지, 콤파니는 대량 생산과 거대 유통으로 획일화된 이 세계에서 드물게 지역의 색채를 지키고 있는 작은 마을들을 찾아갑니다. 나무와 흙, 금속과 직물 등 지역에서 생산된 재료를 바탕으로 수 세대에 걸쳐 전승되어 온 제작 방식을 존중하며, 그 안에 담긴 영성(spirituality)과 지혜를 오늘의 감각으로 다시 바라봅니다. 

이 전시는 두 작가가 세계 곳곳의 제작자들과 나눈 긴밀한 대화와 협업의 여정을 보여줍니다. 현장에서 얻은 영감이 드로잉을 거쳐 장인의 손길로 실현되고, 완성된 물건이 다시 시장에서 사람들을 만나 세상으로 퍼져 나가는 “아이디어의 순환”이 전시 속에 펼쳐집니다. 하나의 물건이 탄생하고 세상과 만나기까지의 긴 여정을 따라가며, 그에 담긴 존중과 애정의 가치를 함께 느껴 보시기 바랍니다.

작가 소개

콤파니는 한국 출신의 아무 송과 핀란드인 요한 올린이 2000년에 설립한 디자인 스튜디오입니다. 디자인의 다양한 영역을 넘나드는 동시에 아티스트, 퍼포머, 제작자의 역할을 유연하게 수행하며 핀란드 디자인계에서 특별한 위상을 구축해 왔습니다.

이들의 활동은 현장 중심의 탐정적(investigative) 조사 방식에서 출발합니다. 창작의 아이디어는 스튜디오가 아닌 제작 현장에서의 소통을 통해 서서히 구체화됩니다. 디자이너와 장인, 두 세계가 존중과 신뢰를 바탕으로 함께 만든 전통적이면서도 현대적인 작품들은 작가의 비밀 가게인 ‘살라카우파(Salakauppa)’를 통해 판매됩니다. 제작된 물건이 시장으로, 시장의 물건이 일상으로, 일상의 물건이 또 다른 아이디어로 이어지는 순환 구조 속에 자신들의 역할이 있다고 작가들은 믿습니다. 

콤파니의 시크릿 프로젝트는 키아스마 현대미술관(2007), 헬싱키 디자인 박물관(2019), 아오모리 현립미술관(2015)을 비롯해 미국, 러시아, 벨기에, 일본 등 유수의 미술관과 갤러리에서 전시된 바 있습니다. 두 사람은 헬싱키 디자인 어워드(2018), 핀란드 국가 디자인상(2010), 밀라노 가구 박람회 특별 언급상(2008) 등의 수상자로 선정되었으며, 아르텍, 마리메꼬, 에르메스 등 세계적 브랜드와 함께 다양한 협업을 진행해 왔습니다.

시크릿 프로젝트는 지금도 진행 중입니다. 이들은 여행이 끝나면 헬싱키로 돌아가 반려견 야야와 숲에서 버섯을 채취하는 평범한 일상을 이어가고 있습니다.

 

COMPANY, a Helsinki-based design studio, has spent the past two decades traveling the world in search of unique manufacturing traditions and the local artisans who sustain them. Their journeys are a process of deeply engaging with different cultures and people—an experience of falling in love with the world itself, a true “World Affair.”

From the deep forests of Finland to the vibrant markets of Pakistan, COMPANY seeks out small communities that have managed to preserve their distinct identities in a world increasingly standardized by mass production and global distribution. Working with locally sourced materials—wood, clay, metal, and textiles—they honor techniques passed down through generations, while reinterpreting the spirituality and wisdom embedded within them through a contemporary lens.

Spanning four floors, the exhibition presents the duo’s collaborative journey and close dialogues with makers around the world. Visitors are invited to trace the long journey of an object—from its inception to its encounter with the world—and to reflect on the values of respect and care embedded within it. 

About the Artists

COMPANY is a design studio founded in 2000 by Korean-born Aamu Song and Finnish designer Johan Olin. Moving fluidly across disciplines, they work simultaneously as artists, performers, and makers, establishing a distinctive position within the Finnish design scene.

Their practice is rooted in an investigative, field-based approach. Rather than originating in the studio, ideas gradually take shape through direct engagement and communication at places of making. Built on mutual respect and trust between designers and artisans, these works are distributed through their secret shop, “Salakauppa.”

They see their role within a continuous cycle: objects move from production to market, from market to everyday life, and from daily life back into new ideas.

COMPANY’s secret projects have been exhibited internationally, including at Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art (2007), Design Museum Helsinki (2019), and Aomori Museum of Art (2015), as well as in major museums and galleries across the United States, Russia, Belgium, and Japan. They have received numerous accolades, including the Helsinki Design Award (2018), the Finnish State Prize for Design (2010), and a Special Mention at the Milan Furniture Fair (2008). COMPANY have also collaborated with globally renowned brands such as Artek, Marimekko, and Hermès.

Their secret project continues to this day. When their travels come to an end, they return to Helsinki, where they return to a quiet everyday life—gathering mushrooms in the forest with their dog, Yaya.
